Windows Built for a Rail-Junction Economy
Tolono incorporated in 1865 around an 1856 rail junction, and the housing built for its early railroad-employee population established window styles typical of a modest 19th-century junction town rather than a wealthier settlement. Much of that original window stock has been replaced multiple times in the century and a half since.
Replacement Windows on Open Prairie Exposure
Without significant tree cover around Tolono's original townsite, windows there face more direct sun and wind exposure than in a more sheltered village, which can shorten the service life of both frames and glazing. That exposure is worth factoring into a Tolono window-replacement plan.
